Safety effects of work zone advisory systems under the intelligent connected vehicle environment: a microsimulation approach

Purpose This study aims to investigate the safety effects of work zone advisory systems. The traditional system includes a dynamic message sign (DMS), whereas advanced an in-vehicle warning application under connected vehicle (CV) environment. Design/methodology/approach A comparative analysis was conducted based on microsimulation experiments. Findings results indicate that CV-based outperforms DMS. From this study, optimal distances placing DMS varies according different traffic conditions. Nevertheless, negative influence excessive distance placed from would be more obvious when there is heavier volume. Thus, it recommended should shortened if congestion. It also revealed higher market penetration rate CVs will lead safer network good Research limitations/implications Because used only microsimulation, do not reflect real-world drivers’ reactions and CV messages. series driving simulator experiments need capture real behaviors so as unresolved-related issues. Human machine interface needs simulate process information delivery. validation simulation model because data limitation.
